Adopt-a-Family

Adopt-a-Family for the Holidays

During the holiday season, we offer the opportunity for volunteers to “adopt” a family in one of our programs by purchasing them gifts and food items to make their holiday extra special.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving adoptions are now closed for 2024. Thank you to all who provided food boxes to our families!

Christmas

Christmas adoptions are now closed for 2024. All participants should receive their assigned family’s wish list by the first week of December. Please contact Antoinette with questions: volunteer@nicholashouse.org.

Looking for another way to help our families this holiday season? We are in need of transportation cards for our clients! Please consider donating gift cards for gas stations, Lyft, Uber, or MARTA. Cards can be dropped off at the shelter during regular business hours or mailed to us at PO Box 15577 Atlanta, GA 30333. Contact Jen with questions: development@nicholashouse.org.

Another easy way to help our families is pay their $100 furniture bank delivery fee! We partner with the Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta to provide furniture to families who are moving out of our shelter into their own home. While the furniture itself is free, there is a $100 fee to have the items delivered curbside to each resident’s home. If you’d like to help cover this cost for a family, you can make a donation here.

Family Needs Sponsors

For families dealing with the crisis of homelessness, it can be difficult to meet unanticipated needs. As the families we serve work hard to increase their income and earn a living wage, they may occasionally need a small boost of support to ensure they stay on track.

That’s where our Family Needs Sponsors come in!  These generous supporters agree to help meet unanticipated needs of a family by purchasing items or providing direct financial support. Providing these items usually costs relatively little, but makes a significant difference for a family. Some common needs are:

  • Purchasing a car seat to safely transport a toddler;
  • Providing baby clothes to welcome a newborn;
  • Acquiring tickets to an attraction to celebrate a child’s birthday.

Occasionally, sponsors may also help with larger needs like purchasing essential furniture for a family that has just moved into their own apartment, or helping a family in transition with their utility bills for a period.

Family Needs Sponsors agree to make a good-faith effort to help meet the needs of the families we serve and are placed on a list of individuals or businesses who may be contacted when needs emerge. Most requests fall within a $60-$120 price point and can easily be met with an online order delivered to our shelter location. If a Family Needs Sponsor is unable to meet a particular need, they reserve the right to refuse a request. All Family Needs donations are tax-deductible.
